University Mathematics Lecturing as Modelling Mathematical Discourse

چکیده

Abstract The lecture format, while being the subject of much criticism, is still one most common formats university mathematics teaching. This paper investigates lecturing as a means modelling mathematical discourse, sometimes highlighted in literature its important functions. data analysed are taken from first-semester lectures given by seven lecturers at three Swedish universities, all concerning various aspects function concept. Analysis was carried out commognitive perspective, which distinguishes between object-level and meta-level discourse. Here I focus on two discourse: introducing new objects; what counts valid endorsement narrative. analysis reveals number metarules reasoning behaviour, both more general rules such precision consensus, specifically construction narratives. contributes to small but growing body empirical research teaching, also lends support previous claims about aspect lecturing, thus contributing deepened understanding format potential role future

Mathematical modelling in mathematics education and instruction

This paper aims at giving a concise survey of the present state-of-the-art of mathematical modelling in mathematics education and instruction. It will consist of four parts. In part 1, some basic concepts relevant to the topic will be clarified and, in particular, mathematical modelling will be defined in a broad, comprehensive sense. Part 2 will review arguments for the inclusion of modelling ...

Mathematical Discourse as Group Cognition

This chapter reviews Anna Sfard’s book, Thinking as communicating: Human development, the growth of discourses and mathematizing (Sfard, 2008). It highlights insights of the book that are relevant to studying virtual math teams as well as calling for further analysis to situate Sfard’s theory within the discourses of CSCL and socio-cultural theory.

MATHEMATICS AND MATHEMATICAL MODELLING Dynamical Models of Plant Growth

To explain the diversity of plant forms, sizes, and lifetimes, we introduce a new model of plant growth based on simplified but realistic biological mechanisms. Growth of plants is described by means of a free boundary problem where the moving boundary corresponds to the meristem, a narrow layer of proliferating cells. All other plant tissues serve to conduct nutrients and metabolites. In the o...

Mathematical Modelling as Problem Solving for Children in the Singapore Mathematics Classrooms

The newly revised mathematics curriculum in Singapore has recently factored Applications and Modelling to be part of the teaching and learning of mathematics. Its implication is that even children should now be involved in works of mathematical modelling. However, to be able to implement modelling activities in the primary mathematics classroom, it is at the outset needful for teachers to have ...

Mathematical Discourse vs. Mathematical Intuition

One of the most uninformative statements one could possibly make about mathematics is that the axiomatic method expresses the real nature of mathematics, i.e., that mathematics consists in the deduction of conclusions from given axioms. For the same could be said about several other subjects, for example, about theology. Think of the first part of Spinoza’s Ethica ordine geometrico demonstrata ...
